Is Wool the Superhero of Fabrics?

The makers of wool toppers make some bold claims about their products.  They assert that wool help you sleep cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.  If you’re a skeptic you might be thinking that sounds too good to be true, but it is true.

Wool is an extremely flexible fiber.  It can be bent and bent over and over  —up to 20,000 times —before it breaks.  That’s a lot of bending.   It is also a strong fabric and has been compared to steel (in its strength not its feel).  Also wool is not a one-season fabric.  It’s more like those hot / cold mugs that keep hot beverages hot and cold beverages cold.

Wool has tiny air pockets that allow the fabric to breathe and insulate.  In the winter these pockets hold heat from your body. In the summer this breathable fabric helps air circulates and also wicks away moisture from your body helping you to sleep cooler.

Perhaps more importantly a wool topper provides a comfortable cozy feel.  It is a good choice for sleepers who are looking for a little extra softness or temperature regulation without the need for additional support.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of a wool topper we’d like to introduce you to Sleep and Beyond. Sleep and Beyond is a 3rd generation manufacturing company.   Since 1992 they have recognized the superior qualities of wool. According to their website they are committed to sustainable practices including fair trade with factories located in Kyrgyzstan, India and China.

Sleep and Beyond carries two wool toppers, both 1.5 inches thick.  Their premium topper is made from merino wool and is called myMerino® Topper.  The certified merino wool is encased is certified organic cotton.  The myTopper® is filled with Shropshire wool and covered in a natural cotton percale.  There are corner straps to help keep the topper in place.  We have samples of both products in our store.

Just as Superman had his kryptonite wool has a few characteristics worth noting.  Initially there may be a strong smell when you first receive your topper.  It is not a chemical odor and quickly dissipates after a few days.  If you are sensitive to smell you may want to air out your topper before use.

Also wool tends to lose about a third of its loft over time so a 1.5 inch topper will become a 1 inch topper but the temperature regulating characteristic of wool will remain.

We invite you into the store to talk more about the Sleep and Beyond topper over a hot drink in winter and a cold drink in summer.   We are located in the Broadstone Market Place 2690 East Bidwell Street, Folsom, CA 95630.
