Can a Talalay Mattress be Certified Organic? – Yes but only if it meets rigorous GOTS standards

At the Healthy Bed Store in Folsom, CA we proudly carry latex mattresses.    We think a quality latex mattress is an excellent sleeping surface that will provide comfort and support for years to come.

If you’ve researched latex you know that there are two types of processing, Dunlop and Talalay.  Both types of natural latex are made from the sap of the rubber tree.  However, they are processed differently, with Dunlop being the older and more straightforward manufacturing process.  We think both are excellent choices for a latex mattress. But if you are a side sleeper we’d probably recommend Talalay as the comfort layer.  We like everything about Talalay except that it’s a little harder to explain its organic certification.

The Talalay process includes a few extra steps not found in Dunlop.  In addition to being poured into a mold like Dunlop, Talalay latex is vacuum-sealed and flash-frozen.  These extra steps give Talalay a more uniform consistency.  (It also explains why Talalay is slightly more expensive than Dunlop).  However, because of these extra steps natural Talalay cannot be certified Organic to USDA or GOLS standards.  If you’re looking for a certified organic mattress can you still chose Talalay?  The answer to that question is a qualified yes.
